UPDATE (5 November 2025): The Town Council have been advised by GWR that the planned engineering works to the Newquay line are being extended as follows:
“This work was originally due to be completed by Saturday 8 November, but testing of the new signalling system is taking longer than expected. As a result, we now expect to resume train services on Tuesday 18 November. We are very sorry for the additional disruption this will cause. Bus replacement services will continue to operate between Newquay and St Austell. Please note that most buses will not stop at Par – for connections, please change at St Austell. Train services will still be operating at Par and St Austell towards Plymouth or Penzance.
Signalling upgrades are among the most complex tasks on the railway, and it became clear after work began on Monday that more time was needed to complete the testing safely. Safety is always our top priority, and the railway can only reopen once the new system has been fully tested and approved for use.
Once complete, this upgrade will pave the way for an hourly service between Newquay and Par from next year — more than doubling the current frequency. It will also enable a direct link from Newquay to Falmouth, via Par, St Austell, and Truro. In addition, Newquay station will have two operational platforms for the first time since 1987.
We will be communicating this change in journey planners and through our customer communications. For more information please visit gwr.com/upgrade”.
Great Western Railway have advised the Town Council of essential rail improvement works taking place in November.
These works will affect train services on the Newquay Line between Monday 3 November and Friday 7 November. A replacement bus service will operate between St Austell and Newquay, stopping at all stations, with some buses running non-stop during peak periods. Please note, most replacement buses will not stop at Par; passengers will need to change at St Austell for onward travel.
Train services at Par and St Austell: Trains will continue to operate from Par and St Austell towards Plymouth and Penzance.
At Par, train services will run on the Cornish Main Line only.
All timetable changes have been updated in online journey planners. GWR will also be informing customers via station announcements, posters, and social media. For full details, please visit gwr.com/upgrade.
