Hill Steps Update (26.2.16) – Footpath Closed from 29.2.16
Works to Hill Steps have so far progressed with the footpath open. From Monday 29 February it will be necessary to close the footpath in order to safely deal with the highest part of the wall. This is the section of wall on the tight corner near the bottom of the steps.
Hill Steps will be reopened as soon as practicable until then, alternative routes to get into town are either via the Church or down Hill Street. We plan to keep you updated on progress, as and when relevant, via our website, Facebook and Twitter pages.
Hill Steps Update (29.1.16) – Works to Start
Works will commence on Monday 15 February 2016 to fix the affected area. These works are expected to take between 6-8 weeks. It’s hoped that for the majority of these works, Hill Steps can remain open and be passable. However, it will be closed for a portion of this time in order to safely deal with the highest part of the wall which is on the tight corner near the bottom.
We hope you find this update helpful and you can see that every effort is being made to get this matter resolved.
Hill Steps Update (13.01.16) – Temporarily Open
We know how important this route is to and from the town and confirm this has been reopened for now. This is following works to reduce and remove parts of the wall that had either collapsed or were causing us concern.
Council agreed at their Extra Ordinary meeting (12 January 2016) that works be undertaken to fix the affected area. Michael Vanstone, who undertook the works to fix the failure at Hill Steps in the summer, have been appointed however, we have yet to firm up on when this will be taking place and for how long. We are hoping this will be soon and plan to keep you updated on progress, as and when relevant, via our website, Facebook and twitter pages
Hill Steps Closed
The New Year has greeted us with another slip at Hill Steps. The area affected is further down from the fix undertaken during the summer at the bend in the steps and the wall facing the roadway. For safety reasons this route into and from town has been closed. An emergency closure order is in place.
Please note that until Hill Steps is reopened alternative routes to get into town are either via the Church or down Hill Street. Directional signs have been put up to help in this regard.
Thankfully the area affected does not require any trees to be felled therefore, planning permission will not be required this time. This is good news and will speed up the process in being able to get this repaired.
You will be pleased to hear, that although the slip only happened this Monday we have moved on this issue quickly. PWH Surveyors visited the site mid-afternoon on the 4 January 2016 and their proposals for repair are being considered at an Extra-Ordinary meeting of Council being held on Tuesday 12 January 2016.
