St Petroc’s Churchyard Tree Management Plan

Padstow Town Council’s tree specialist has prepared a 10-year Tree Management Plan for St Petroc’s Churchyard. The Council is seeking formal approval of the Plan with the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) and Cornwall Council.

The purpose of the Tree Management Plan is to enable works to the Yew trees whilst managing the visual impact of the churchyard. When preparing the plan, it was thought many of the trees are large, dominating the churchyard and overbearing making it very shady. Over time with Yew trees, the vertical shoots start to fall away from the main crown thus detracting from the appearance of the more formal form for which they are renowned. The Management Plan will see the height of the trees reduced through a 10-year rolling programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

What has the Council done so far?
A formal application regarding the whole 10-year plan was agreed by the Diocesan Advisory Committee.
As the churchyard falls under a Conservation Area Cornwall Council are notified of works, currently they have agreed phase 1 and 2 works.
1 phase of tree height reduction took place end of February 2025, a tree inspection was undertaken in October 2025 to understand how the trees have responded.

What happens next?
The Council will look at recommendations from the tree inspectors October 2025 visit to understand phase 1 cut and look to scheduled phase 2 over the winter.

How far will the trees be reduced?
The extent of the reduction will vary according to each tree but they will be reduced by around 1/3 or 1/2. The Plan aims to spread the works over a 10-year period with approx. 2-3 trees being reduced each year. Trees will be monitored after cut back and the works schedule adapted if necessary. Advice from the Diocesan Advisory Committee tree specialist is that yew trees can take a couple of years to re-form after a cut back.

Who will undertake the works and when?
All works will be undertaken by qualified tree surgeons and will take place during the quieter winter months when it will be better for the tree and wildlife, but only after the Diocesan Advisory Committee have given approval for the Tree Management Plan and Cornwall Council have been notified.
